|
In 1900, the Emperor Gojong directed the establishment of Jangchungdan on where it used to be Namsoyeong site in order to commemorate patriots who sacrificed their lives in Eulmisabyun(Assassination of the Empress Myeongseong) and Gapsin Jeongbyeon(Gapsin Coup) such as Hong Gae-Hoon, Min Tae-Ho, Lee Kyung-Jik etc. Memorial service was held every spring and fall on Jangchungdan. It was abolished by the Japanese in 1910 August and in 1920, this area was named Jangchungdan park and cherry blossoms were planted and park facilities were installed. Later, Jangchungdan temple and attached facilities were damaged due to the Korean war but Jangchungdan monument still continued. This monument was originally in Youngbingwan, but has been moved to the western side of Supyogyo(Bridge) in 1969. The letter 'Jangchungdan' on the monument was written by Soonjong when he was a prince, and on the back of the monument is a 143 lettered sentence of praise by Min Young-Hwan. | |
